🌱 Today we're featuring Arthur “Art” Smith

🌱 Today we're featuring Arthur “Art” Smith (1917-1982). Art Smith was a leading modernist jeweler who created jewelry pieces for notable figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Duke Ellington.

🌱 Born in Cuba to Jamaican parents, Smith spent most of his life in NYC, his family moving to Brooklyn in 1920. There he won a scholarship to the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and graduated with a degree in commercial art, majoring in sculpture. For six years, he worked for the WPA and Junior Achievement, took jewelry classes, and became an assistant to his jewelry teacher, Winifred Mason, before setting up his own studio on Cornelia St in 1946. After dealing with racial violence, he moved and set up a new shop on W 4th St, in Greenwich Village, and worked there until three years before his death.

🌱 Smith first worked with inexpensive materials like copper and brass but used higher-cost materials as he attracted more wealthy clientele. An exhibition of his work at the Brooklyn Museum featured almost exclusively silver pieces, mostly donated from Smith’s companion and heir, Charles Russell. Smith was inspired by jazz music - one of his works is even an homage to singer, dancer, and activist Josephine Baker. His unique and theatrical jewelry was inspired by surrealism, biomorphism, and primitivism.

🌱 Art Smith was an impressive artist and sculptor who actively supported gay and black civil rights. He worked with jewelry in a unique and transformative way that viewed the body as part of the artwork. In his words, “The body is a component in design just as air and space are. Like line, form, and color, the body is a material to work with.”
